Early Treatment
The earlier we catch problems with your child’s bite, the simpler they are to fix. The results are often better than if we wait and will require significantly less work. We may not need to keep braces on your child for as long when they are younger, which means less expense for you.
It is recommended that children visit an orthodontist as soon as their dentist notices that there might be a problem, or before they are seven years old. We may not have to do anything at this age, other than monitor the child’s mouth. However, if we continue to watch your child, we can start treatment right away if something arises.
Early intervention can be beneficial. We will watch how your child’s mouth and teeth grow and develop, so if we see something that needs to be done, we can do it as soon as possible. We will also know exactly when to start treatment, if needed.
Braces For Teens
Braces are not as scary as most teens think. Technology has advanced a lot in recent years, providing us with newer styles of braces. The result is a faster, more comfortable, and more effective treatment. Braces come in different colors, styles, and materials, so your teen can customize their look and express their personality.
The first thing most patients wonder about when they have to get braces is how long will they have to wear them. There is no easy answer to this question because it depends on several factors. For example, it depends on how early we catch the problem, what needs to be fixed, how your teeth respond to treatment, and how willing you are to follow directions.
It is typically recommended that children begin seeing an orthodontist at the age of seven. The earlier you catch a problem, the easier the problem can be to treat. There are also times when we find a problem but may put off treatment until they are older.
Adult Treatment
No matter your age, you deserve a smile that gives you confidence. Braces are not just for children anymore. With the latest advancements in technology, we can get you the smile you deserve! Here at Summit Dental, we work hard to give you the smile you’ve always wanted. We offer several different treatments that can be effective no matter how old you are. More and more orthodontic treatments are becoming available to give adults the smile that they want.
Orthodontic treatments are not just for your smile. Fixing your teeth can also dramatically change your oral health. When you have crooked teeth or a malocclusion (uneven bite), you may be prone to oral health problems such as gum disease and tartar buildup.
Clear Aligners
Reasons To Choose Clear Aligners
- Comfort
- The Convenience of Fewer Dental Visits
- Virtually Invisible
- Removable
- Easier To Care For & Clean
The alternative to metal braces!
With massive advancements in technology over the past decade, new treatment options have become available. Clear aligners are a clear tray that is fitted to the teeth. The hygiene of clear aligner braces is far easier than traditional braces.
You will get a new one every two weeks so that your teeth are moved a little bit at a time.
Note that, you must take the aligners out to eat or drink anything besides water. This differs from traditional braces where you have to be more careful about eating certain foods.
Although you must remove your aligners this does offer more comfort and convenience when you are eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, and flossing.

Braces
Types of Braces We Offer:
- Fixed or Removable Braces
- Stainless Steel Braces
- Clear Braces
- Lingual braces
Each system comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. However not every patient is a candidate for each option. It is important to know that each of these exist, and then to book your appointment at Summit Dental to have a one on one discussion about what is best for you!
Retention
After you have worn your braces for the appropriate amount of time, we move into the retention stage of your treatment. It is VERY important not to skip this step, or all of your hard work will not pay off as you had hoped. Your teeth may shift around or move back to where they were instead of staying in place.
During retention, you will have to wear retainers as your teeth adjust to staying in their new place without braces. Some should be worn only at night, while others need to be worn almost all of the time. This will depend on your specific needs.
Brushing your teeth is easier in this phase since the retainers are removable. All you have to do is remove your retainer, and then you will be able to brush your teeth better than you were able to when you had braces. You should also brush your retainer thoroughly before placing it back in your mouth.
Surgical Orthodontics
Surgical orthodontics also called orthognathic surgery, is used for severe cases of bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, and malocclusions. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is considered a dental specialty and helps complex cases involving the mouth, jaw, face, and skull.
If your case requires surgical orthodontics, your orthodontist at Summit Dental, will work with our partner oral and maxillofacial surgeon to provide you with the best and most comprehensive care possible.
This close relationship between our orthodontist and maxilla-facial surgeon means that you will have the best possible communication between each member of your healthcare team, providing you with the best and most efficient treatment.
Surgical orthodontics helps patients improve their bites, though it can also help with other aesthetic concerns, such as facial structure and symmetry. Surgery can only be completed after the jaw is finished growing. For younger patients, there often exist non-surgical options.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age is best for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age, but the optimal age for treatment varies depending on the individual. For children, orthodontic treatment can be used in conjunction with their growing jaw to help reduce treatment time and maximise the aesthetic and functional outcome. However, adults can absolutely also benefit from orthodontic treatment, and there is no upper age limit. For your child, the “best age” is something we will need to see specifically after a clinical exam. We recommend a first consultation with the orthodontist most often around 7 years old.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the severity of the misalignment and the type of treatment being used. Generally, treatment can take anywhere from several months to a few years.
How do I care for my teeth during orthodontic treatment?
Maintaining good oral hygiene is important during orthodontic treatment to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental issues. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using interdental brushes or a Waterpik to clean between the brackets and wires of braces or aligners. Additionally, avoiding hard, sticky, or sugary foods can help to prevent damage to orthodontic appliances.
Will orthodontic treatment be uncomfortable? Orthodontic treatment can cause some discomfort, particularly during the initial adjustment period and after tightening appointments. However, any discomfort should be temporary. If you are experiencing any discomfort, please call us and let us know, we have all the tricks to help you out!
How often will I need to visit my orthodontist during treatment?
The frequency of orthodontic appointments will vary depending on the individual and the type of treatment being used. Generally, patients will need to visit their orthodontist every 4-8 weeks for adjustments and monitoring of their progress.
Is orthodontic treatment covered by insurance?
For most patients, the obligatory health insurance does not include orthodontics. There does exist however orthodontic insurance as part of a complimentary insurance plan. Specific coverage and limits will vary depending on the plan you choose. It is important to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs. Be sure to note that many people will be denied coverage if they do not opt to take this insurance at a very young age. It is a very good idea to bring this question up with your regular dentist during your child’s first dental appointment, which should be just after their first birthday.
How can I find the right orthodontist for me?
Finding the right orthodontist is an important part of achieving a successful outcome from orthodontic treatment. It is important to choose an orthodontist who is experienced, knowledgeable, and has a good reputation in the community. It is also very important that your orthodontist is someone who is invested in the community. Orthodontics takes time and ideally your orthodontist will be someone who is present throughout your entire treatment. Our team is composed of the best of the best, just come in a see for yourself!
