Dental X-Rays: Navigating the Benefits and Risks

Radiation from dental x-rays often sparks concerns and questions, and it’s crucial to address both the apprehensions and advantages associated with dental radiography. In this blog, we’ll unravel the complexities of radiation risks, shedding light on its dual nature in the dental realm.

Statistics

  • Total radiation dose per year ≈ 4,000 μSv
  • 2,000 μSv ≈ Natural radiation dosage from living in Switzerland
  • 2,000 μSv ≈ Dosage from human effects (smoking, medical, flights)
  • 1 intra-oral dental radiograph ≈ 2 μSv
  • 1 extraorale OPT ≈ 20 μSv

In 2017, dental radiographs or dental X-Rays accounted for 47% of the total frequency of radiographic procedures in Switzerland, yet they only contributed to 1% of the total radiation dose. This is due to the utilization of very low-dose radiation techniques.

What do these numbers mean ? In this context, microsieverts represent a unit of measurement for radiation exposure. So how much is a microsievert of radiation ?

  • Lethal Dose: Exposure to 8 million microsieverts
  • Health Impact: Harmful effects observed at 2 million microsieverts
  • 1-Hour Visit to Chernobyl: Exposure of 6,000 microsieverts
  • Eating a Banana: Equivalent to 0.1 microsievert
  • Sleeping Next to Someone: Minimal exposure, 0.05 microsievert per night

First, let’s talk about the bad points of radiation. The most obvious concern when it comes to dental X-Rays is the potential for exposure to ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation has been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer and other health issues. This is a very real concern, and it’s one that we at Summit Dental take very seriously.

That being said, it’s important to remember that the amount of radiation used in dental radiography is very small in relative terms. In fact, the amount of radiation used in a typical dental X-ray is roughly equivalent to the amount of radiation you would receive from a short flight. While it’s true that any amount of radiation exposure carries some risk, the risks associated with dental radiography are generally considered to be small, when being used responsibly.

The most obvious benefit of dental radiography is that it allows us, as dentists, to diagnose and treat dental issues that might otherwise go undetected. X-rays can help dentists identify tooth decay, gum disease, and other issues that can cause pain and discomfort if left untreated. By catching these issues early, we can often provide less invasive treatments that are less painful and less expensive.

Another benefit of dental radiography is that it can help dentists plan complex dental procedures. For example, if you need to have a tooth extracted, your dentist might use X-rays to determine the best way to remove the tooth and to reduce the risk of complications during the procedure. This can help ensure that your dental treatment is as safe and effective as possible.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the risks associated with not taking a radiograph can sometimes be greater than the risks associated with the radiograph itself. For example, if you have a toothache, your dentist might need to take an X-ray to determine the cause of the pain. If you refuse to have the X-ray taken, we may not be able to diagnose the issue and you may be left with ongoing pain and discomfort.

While there are certainly risks associated with dental radiography, the benefits of responsible radiography far outweigh the potential risks, for most patients, in most cases. By using low dose X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat dental issues, we can provide safe, effective treatments that can improve your overall oral health.

Radiography is an essential diagnostic tool in modern dentistry, providing valuable information about the structure of teeth, jawbones, and surrounding tissues. In recent years, there have been significant advances in radiograph technology, leading to higher image resolution and lower radiation exposure for patients. At Summit Dental, we are committed to staying at the forefront of these developments and invest in the latest radiography equipment to ensure that our patients receive the highest quality care with the lowest radiation possible. Our digital radiography systems utilize state-of-the-art technology to produce high-resolution images with minimal radiation exposure, allowing us to provide accurate diagnoses while keeping our patients safe and comfortable. With the latest technology at our fingertips, we can identify dental problems at an early stage and provide prompt and effective treatment, helping our patients maintain optimal oral health.

If you have concerns about dental radiography, don’t hesitate to ask us more about this subject. We can help you understand the risks and benefits of this important tool and can work with you to develop a treatment plan that is safe and effective for your unique needs.
