I’m in pain, what should I do?

If you have a tooth pain, it’s important to take action quickly to address the problem and relieve the pain.

 

Tooth pain can arise from many different causes so be sure to call our front desk to fix an emergency appointment. We will always find a moment to see you within 24 hours of your call. Our extremely knowledgeable staff can give you some important information, so don’t hesitate to call!

If for one reason or another you cannot reach us immediately by telephone, here are some steps you can take to help alleviate your pain temporarily:

Apply a cold compress:

Hold a cold compress, such as an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas, against your cheek near the painful tooth for about 15-20 minutes. This can help to reduce swelling and numb the pain.

 

Take over-the-counter pain relievers:

Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to reduce pain and inflammation.

 

Avoid hard or crunchy foods:

Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods to avoid aggravating the painful tooth.

My child fell and hit their mouth, what should I do?

If your child has fallen and hit their mouth, it’s important to take immediate action to assess the damage and provide appropriate treatment.

Here are some steps you can take:

 

Inspect the mouth:

Check your child’s mouth to see if there are any visible injuries or bleeding. Look for any broken or missing teeth, cuts, or bruises on the gums, lips, or tongue.

Rinse with clean, warm water:

If there is any bleeding, rinse your child’s mouth with warm water to clean the area and help reduce inflammation.

 

Apply a cold compress:

Apply a cold compress, such as an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas, to the outside of your child’s mouth to reduce swelling and numb any pain.

I broke a tooth, what should I do?

If you’ve broken a tooth, it’s important to take action quickly to minimize pain and prevent further damage.

 

Here are some steps you can take:

Rinse your mouth:

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area and reduce the risk of infection.

 

Apply a cold compress:

Hold a cold compress, such as an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas, against your cheek near the broken tooth for about 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling and numb the pain.

 

Save any broken pieces:

If you have any pieces of the broken tooth, save them in a clean container with saliva. In some cases, we may be able to repair the tooth directly with the fractured part. If you don’t have any, don’t worry, we have many techniques to restore your smile!

 

Cover the sharp edge:

If the broken tooth has a sharp edge, cover it with a piece of dental wax or sugarless gum to prevent it from cutting your tongue or cheeks.

I lost a crown (or bridge), what should I do?

If you have lost a crown, bridge or other fixed dental prosthesis, it’s important to take action quickly to prevent any damage or infection to the affected tooth or teeth.

 

Here are some steps you can take:

Save the crown or bridge:

If you still have the crown or bridge, save it in a clean and dry container. We will evaluate if the crown or bridge is intact and can be reattached, this may save you time and money.

 

Clean the area:

Rinse your mouth with mouth wash to clean the area and reduce the risk of infection. If there are any remaining pieces of the crown or bridge, gently remove them with a toothbrush or floss.

 

Do not apply dental cement:

Some pharmacies sell dental cement. It is very important to allow us to evaluate the crown and tooth prior to cementation. If it painful when left uncovered, you can cover the tooth with dental wax, which can also be found at most pharmacies.

 

Avoid hard or crunchy foods :

To prevent further damage or dislodging of the crown or bridge, avoid eating hard or crunchy foods until you can see your dentist.

I lost or broke my dental prothesis, what should I do?

If you have lost or broken your dental prosthesis, such as partial or complete dentures, it’s important to take action quickly to prevent any discomfort or further damage. Here are some steps you can take:

 

Remove any remaining pieces:

If your dentures are broken, remove any remaining pieces from your mouth to prevent discomfort or injury to your mouth.

Clean the area:

Rinse your mouth with mouth watsh to clean the area and reduce the risk of infection. If there are any remaining pieces of the dentures, gently remove them with a toothbrush or floss.

 

Over the counter adhesive (only temporarily)

If you can’t see your dentist right away and your dentures are causing discomfort, you can use a denture adhesive to hold the dentures in place temporarily.

 

Avoid wearing damaged dentures:

Damaged dentures as this can cause further damage to your mouth and gums.

 

Consider a spare set:

If you wear dentures, it’s a good idea to have a spare set available in case of emergencies. At summit dental we have a technique to reproduce existing dentures at just a fracture of the original cost.
